U14 cricket: Island on top after day one
Tuesday 13th July 2004, 12:00AM BST.
ISLANDS were the winners as yesterday’s Jersey Senior Schools Cricket U14s festival kicked off.
Both the Channel Islands and the Isle of Wight recorded wins and top the table with 20 points each.
The CI beat Jersey by 142 runs, while the Isle of Wight beat North Hampshire by five wickets.
At Les Quennevais the CI, who batted first, set a target of 204 for the Jersey Select side after an impressive score of 61 from Tom Gibbs and 27 and 24 from Anthony Kay and Mark Chipperfield respectively.
Ben De Figuieredo managed 19 runs for the Jersey Select side but it wasn’t enough as good bowling from Edward Muhlemann, Anthony Kay and Guernsey’s Andy Robin saw off the hosts for 62.
Also at Les Quennevais, the IoW beat North Hants by five wickets, making light work of catching the county side’s 58 runs.
Meanwhile, Huntingdonshire drew with Winchester despite Hunts notching 213 for five.
Winchester managed 130 for five but held on for the tie.
Today, Jersey Select are taking on North Hants at FB Fields, St Clement, while the IoW are playing Hunts at Les Quennevias while the Channel Islands meet Winchester at College Field.
