Former Deputy dies

FORMER States Deputy Bobby Smale died at the General Hospital on Monday at the age of 81.

He represented St Helier No 1 District from 1957 to 1978, serving on the former Telephones, Sewerage and Public Health Committees.

A hotelier by profession, Mr Smale was a founder member and vice-president of the Jersey Hotel and Guest House Association.

He was also a member and past president of the Lions Club of Jersey and the Jersey branch of the Royal Life-Saving Society.

He served the Island and the wider community as chairman of the International Year of the Child and the International Year of Disabled People.

Mr Smale served in the Royal Navy during the war, seeing action on the Russian convoys, and each year, on Liberation Day, he welcomed fellow veterans to Jersey.
