Motor sport: Walker off to Oulton

Thursday 15th July 2004, 12:00AM BST.

FORMULA 3 racing driver James Walker, currently 17th in the championship, travels to Oulton park this weekend for the next two rounds of competition.

If he races as well as he did last time out, at Donington, he will collect more vital points.

At Donington, although Walker was unhappy with his car’s performance, he qualified for race one in tenth place, ahead of his experienced team-mate Andrew Thompson and championship contender James Rossitier, and just one spot behind championhsip leader Nelson Piquet, and he finished in eighth.

Race two was better yet, with a best-ever eighth on the grid.

Ahead of several 2004 race-winners, he made an excellent start on a wet, but drying, track.

He completed lap one in fifth spot and, despite being under pressure from three of the season’s leading drivers – Rossiter, Adam Carroll and Danny Watts – he finished the race in that position, just seconds away from his first podium finish and the top-placed United Kingdom driver.
