Alcoholic Island

OVER 5,000 people are dependent on drink in an Island where alcohol consumption is up to twice the UK rate.

The extent of Jersey’s drinking problem was revealed in the States yesterday, when a series of measures for tackling it was approved.

Health president Senator Stuart Syvret said during a debate on adopting a new alcohol strategy that about 5,600 Islanders were alcohol-dependent.

The director of the Island’s Alcohol and Drugs Service, Michael Gafoor said: ‘The figures are frightening.

About one in seven Islanders are alcohol-dependent.’
