Footballer ‘hits out at referee’
Friday 23rd July 2004, 12:00AM BST.
A FORMER Muratti star was at the centre of a police investigation today after allegedly punching a referee who sent him off.
Nursing a swollen lip, man in black Andy Cox last night told officers he had been assaulted by Charlie Smith after the final whistle.
Mr Smith is accused of losing his temper after being red carded for poking a finger into the referee’s face during his debut for local side St Paul’s.
It is alleged that Mr Smith approached Mr Cox just after the final whistle 15 minutes later and took a swing at him.
St Paul’s lost the pre-season friendly against National League Two club AFC Bournemouth 2-1 at the I J Bathe field in St Saviour.
