Urgent plea to send aid to Sudan

ISLANDERS are being urged by the charity Tearfund to join in the race against time to save the lives of thousands of people at risk of starvation in Sudan.

And in response to calls by Oxfam, Unicef and Tearfund, Jersey’s Overseas Aid Committee have now donated a total of £75,000 for emergency relief in Sudan since May.

Committee president Deputy Jacqui Huet said those agencies will be able to apply for grants for on-going rehabilitation work in Sudan when the 2005 budget is determined in November.

Tearfund has sent out their own appeal to around 400 of their supporters in the Island to donate as much as they can to provide emergency aid in some of the worst affected areas in Darfur and Chad.

The continually developing crisis has occurred in western Sudan after more than a million villagers abandoned their homes in terror of warring militias.
