The greening of St Helier

Wednesday 28th July 2004, 12:00AM BST.

THE Constable of St Helier has admitted that the sudden appearance of large green bicycle signs on his streets has come as ‘a bit of a shock’.

The signs denote the town cycle network, a scheme funded by the Tourism Development Fund but which is the joint initiative of the Public Services Department and the Town Hall.

It is meant to make cycling around town easier and safer.

However, Mr Crowcroft admits that he was not aware that the work was happening this month – and without any explanation to the public.

‘It might have been helpful if the public had been given some information before they went ahead and did it,’ he said.
