Cricket:Ton-up Hague topples Romerils

Tuesday 31st August 2004, 12:00AM BST.

THE semi-finals of the inaugural KPMG Channel Islands Club Championship will be inter-insular affairs.

Jersey champions Sporting Club will host Guernsey Optimists next Saturday at FB1, while Old Victorians will travel to Guernsey on the same day to oppose Cobo.

Sporting Club’s victory on Saturday was down to another superb batting performance by Australian Matt Hague, three times Jersey Cricketer of the Year, scoring an undefeated 132 as SCF cruised to a 172-run victory against Romerils at FB1.

Solid batting performances are built on partnerships, and Hague and Steve Carlyon put on 124 runs for the first wicket before Hague then featured in a 113-run second-wicket pairing with Tony Carlyon.

Hague hit 14 boundaries and one 6 in his innings, with Steve Carlyon striking four 4s and brother Tony two 4s and two 6s.

Sporting Club’s bowlers all took wickets, Tony Carlyon 4 for 28 runs in 9.5 overs and teenager Jack Waters and Mark Reynolds two apiece and Nick Jewell one.

Old Victorians booked their semi-final place following an eight-wicket victory against St Ouen at Grainville.

St Ouen struggled throughout, with just Paul Horton and Mark Tribe reaching double figures as they were skittled out for 78 runs in 26.2 of their allotted 45 overs.

Jamie Mackintosh helped himself to four wickets in his six overs while father-and-son Steve and Andy Dewhurst took two and three wickets respectively in seven- and three-over spells respectively.

OVs reached their target in 17.3 overs.

In the games in Guernsey over the weekend, Cobo – who topped Group B beating SCF by two points – won by 81 runs against Wanderers while Optimists, who won Group A with a 100 per cent record, defeated Guernsey champions Rovers by eight wickets.

Cobo scored 240 for 4 before restricting Wanderers to 159 for 9, while Rovers were all out for 97 with Optimists reaching their target for the loss of two wickets.

The finalists in the Jersey Cricket Association’s Minor Cup are Springfield and Lord’s Taverners JJCA.

Both won their final group matches on Sunday to win through to the final.

Division II champions Springfield beat SCF Reserves while LTJJCA won against OVs Reserves.
