Tsunami survivors seek orphanage sponsorship
Thursday 31st March 2005, 12:00AM BST.
A FAMILY injured in the Asian tsunami are asking Islanders to sponsor an orphanage in Sri Lanka.
The Felton family from Grouville have joined others in setting up the Hikkaduwa Community Charitable Trust in aid of Lake School.
Jean and Barry Felton and their daughter Sara were in Hikkaduwa in Sri Lanka when the tsunami arrived on Boxing Day.
After returning to Jersey for a few weeks, Sara (26) went back to Hikkaduwa to help with the repair effort.
‘This money that we think is getting out there to help people is not getting through,’ said Mrs Felton.
‘They are still waiting for materials and money and some sort of expertise, and there are at least 1,000 families in this town still living in old canvas tents in the temple grounds.’ As a result of what she saw, Sara identified Lake School as a project for Jersey and is now asking Islanders to sponsor items for its development.
‘In the long run the school will house tsunami victims who have lost their families.
By helping them now we are preparing for the inevitable influx of children in the near future.
This project allows Islanders to see where their money is going and the positive effect it will have on these children’s lives.’
