THE Clarke family, owners of the C Le Masurier property, are officially still the richest in Jersey, with wealth of £500 million, according to the latest Sunday Times rich list.
In the Channel Islands as a whole the Barclay Brothers, owners of the island of Brecqhou, remain supreme, and are now the 33rd wealthiest in the British Isles.
In the past year their wealth has mushroomed, from £750 million to £1.2 billion, following the acquisition of the Telegraph Group.
Fifteen Jersey residents and three Guernsey residents are included in the 2005 list, published on Sunday.
The one new Jersey entry is John Dick, Seigneur of St John’s Manor, who comes in at sixth in the Island and 382nd nationally, with a fortune of £120 million.
An American who made £20 million in the 1987 takeover of European Ferries by P & O, Mr Dick also has property interests in Denver and recently came to public prominence when he hosted the president of Rwanda, Paul Kagame, on an official visit to the Island.
According to the Sunday Times the Clarke family are Jersey’s largest private landowners, owning ‘tracts of St Helier and numerous retail outlets and pubs’.
In the past year their fortune has increased by another £100 million.
Jane Clarke, the daughter of the former Constable of St Helier, Fred Clarke, is said to be leading the reorganisation of assets.
