Cricketers settle for a double tie
Tuesday 5th April 2005, 12:00AM BST.
THE NatWest Indoor League’s Division I and Division II championships have both been shared.
The final round of matches were played last night at Fort Regent and although they produced some exciting cricket, the evening ended in an anti-climax when Abbey International collected the points they required to share the Division I Trophy with Old Victorians after their opponents, Farmers I, failed to turn up.
Centurions had to win to share the Division II title with Pentagon, and they powered their way to an impressive 150 for 4 from their 12 overs against Phoenix Knights.
Centurion Danny Bertram continued his excellent form with an undefeated 58, while Elanco supported him with 44 not out.
Phoenix Knights got off to a good start in reply but despite Jon Prince’s 49, they were never really in the hunt and finished on 113 for 5 from their 12 overs, resulting in Centurions claiming a share of the title.
Springfield ended a disappointing season for them by totalling 135 for 5 against JCA Seniors.
Richard Parker hit a rapid 41 not out and was well supported by Rafique with 42.
The Seniors started brightly but lost wickets regularly in the chase and were all out for 96 in the 11th over, Tom Gales top scoring with 48.
In last night’s other Division I match, Lord’s Taverners JJCA II beat Farmers II by 12 runs.
LTJJCA totalled a useful 97 for 5 from 12 overs, led by Simon Warren with 35 and Tom Wherry with an undefeated 25.
Slow left-armer James Perchard was the pick of the Farmers’ bowlers with 2 for 13 runs from three overs.
Led by Dave Buxton with 26, the Farmers were looking good for a win but they let themselves down with some poor running between the wickets, and three run-outs in two overs left them short of victory.
Division I joint champions Old Victorians and Abbey International and Division II joint-winners Centurions and Pentagon were presented with the winners’ mementos by NatWest’s Dave Gumbrell.
