Senator walks out of States

Tuesday 5th April 2005, 12:00AM BST.

SENATOR Ted Vibert walked out of the States Chamber this morning as the debate over his websites began and challenged his critics to see him in court.

The Senator threw down the gauntlet to the Jersey Financial Services Commission’s director general and his deputy to sue him if they thought they could win a defamation case, labelling today’s scheduled debate on his websites ‘an affront to democracy and justice’.

His sites, www.jerseyfsc.com and www.

jfsc.com, were previously owned by former Senatorial candidate Adrian Walsh and contain material which relates to Jersey Financial Services Commission (JFSC) director general David Carse and deputy director general Helen Hatton.

An attempt by the Economic Development to silence the sites is being debated today.

Senator Vibert told the Assembly in a statement that whatever they decided, he would not give up his right to free speech.

And he signalled his intention not to let up in his scrutiny of the JFSC.

He said: ‘When the item comes to be debated I will leave the Chamber and go and do some real work for my constituents which awaits me, rather than take part in a useless debate.

I take this opportunity to flag to the Assembly that I will be lodging a proposition calling for a full public inquiry into the activities of the JFSC, which are largely uncontrolled by the States.’
