Council representatives look into Ireland’s plastic bags
Thursday 7th April 2005, 12:00AM BST.
JERSEY was represented today at a British-Irish Council meeting in Dublin.
Environment and Public Services president Senator Philip Ozouf and the director of the Environment department, Chris Newton, also used the trip to meet their Irish counterparts as part of finalising Jersey’s solid waste strategy.
Speaking from Dublin, the Senator said that he was particularly interested in finding out more about Ireland’s successful plastic bag tax.
‘Ireland has made some very important strides in recycling, and I’m interested in how they used their tax system to introduce the plastic bag tax,’ he said.
Items under discussion at today’s summit of environment ministers included coastal zone management, waste, climate change and international conservation conventions.
