La Moye prison takes on 16 more staff
Thursday 7th April 2005, 12:00AM BST.
SIXTEEN new prison officers are due to start work at La Moye over the next ten days – but funding shortages mean the prison is still up to 20 staff short.
Despite a recent successful recruitment campaign, governor Steve Guy-Gibbens said that the prison would still be facing an unacceptable overtime bill of around £17,000 every week.
‘We are just replacing normal staff shortages, which means bringing us up to levels that we always ought to be at,’ he said.
‘In my view, we are still in the order of 20 staff short – not 20 prison officers, because I have got prison officers doing work that it is not appropriate for them to do.’ Mr Guy-Gibbens added that little had changed since he was reported in the JEP early last month as saying that £900,415 was being spent a year on overtime.
