Carousel gives new hope to Opera House

Friday 8th April 2005, 12:00AM BST.

THE success of the musical Carousel could mark the start of a new future for the Jersey Opera House.

The show has almost sold out and theatre chairman Christopher Lakeman and show director David Love say the enthusiasm of the audiences, cast and theatre staff has shown the strength of support the Jersey public have for the theatre.

Mr Lakeman said: ‘The quality of the show and the production has been fantastic, as has the support.

You cannot fail to be convinced of the importance of keeping the Opera House open when you see the place full of people of all ages and all backgrounds.

‘I think there is a possibility of the Education, Sport and Culture Committee and the Trust sitting down rather than having the suggested Committee of Inquiry.

That would not provide a solution – it would be a post-mortem on the Opera House, not a cure for the future.’ Carousel director Mr Love said: ‘I think people have put themselves out to really come and see the show and give their support.

It was their opportunity to show the States that, yes, we require and need this theatre.
