A MAN who is alleged by the French authorities to have been involved in the transportation of drugs from Amsterdam could be extradited to France to face charges.

Lee Hunt (27) appeared in the Magistrate’s Court this week for an extradition hearing.

It was the first time the Extradition (Jersey) Law 2004 had been put into effect and the Attorney General now has 28 days to decide whether or not to hand Hunt over to the French authorities.

During the hearing Hunt’s lawyer, Advocate Rebecca Juste, argued that extraditing Hunt ‘would amount to a fundamental infringement of a person’s liberty’.

She said the extradition papers stated that Hunt was suspected of breaking the law in Granville, but there was no information to back up the assertion that he had ever been in France.

The alleged offence was not one which warranted extradition, she argued.

‘In my opinion they have incorrectly drafted their charge and that means that this extradition cannot go ahead.’ Crown Advocate Robin Morris said: ‘I see little significance in those comments.

It is a question of semantics.’
