Going, going, gone

THE days of an Island institution, Glencoe auction sales in St Lawrence, are numbered.
H W Maillard and Son Ltd, who have held sales at the site north of Carrefour Selous since the Occupation, have been given notice to quit and are looking for new premises.
They have identified a former tourist attraction in St Mary as a possible new location for the company auctioneers business.
They also operate an estate agency and funeral directors, both favoured by old Jersey families, from town.
The long-established firm has applied to Planning for a change of use of the former Haute Tombette Carnation Nursery and Butterfly Farm in Rue de la Gros Epine.
The company wants to demolish glass-houses, build an auction hall to the north of the site and turn a store into an auction display area.
The plans also include a car park and the retention of the existing café and shop.
This will be far removed from the present Glencoe facilities where the sale is conducted first in the open before moving inside.
Refreshments are sold from a mobile café.
