IoD aims to expand work shadow idea

THE Institute of Directors are calling on employers to take part in their work shadow scheme, which gives sixth-form students the opportunity to spend a week with local executives.
The scheme has proved so popular this year that the Institute is searching for more companies to accommodate the students.
Mary Curtis, who is the organiser of the scheme, said: ‘The IoD work shadow scheme is a crucial part of the school calendar because the experience of observing a senior person in business really does inspire greater ambition in participants.
The applicants, who faced a rigorous selection process, have shown a range of interests from civil engineering to theatre.
Mrs Curtis said: ‘In an Island seeking business growth, this is extremely positive.
It indicates that Jersey’s young people have a broad range of interests and skills which will help to maintain the rich tapestry of our business culture.
She added: ‘The scheme is competitive, but the quality of applications is high.
With such a diverse range of interests, employers from all industries are encouraged to get involved.
Nicola Davies, chief executive of the scheme’s sponsor, Mourant, said: ‘Our future success depends on nurturing and retaining our local talent, and the shadow scheme gives our students the unique chance to experience business at the highest level.
