Move to prevent wholesale development in built-up areas

ST CLEMENT Deputy Gerard Baudains wants the States to tighten up the Island Plan to prevent wholesale development in the built-up area.

The Deputy, who tried unsuccessfully to delay the Island Plan in July 2002 over concerns about freeing hundreds of potential sites for development by planning zone changes, has lodged a projet to remove any automatic presumption in favour of development.

His projet mirrors moves by former planning committee chairman Deputy Jackie Hilton, who wants Environment and Public Services to review the Island Plan policies relating to the built-up area.

Both Deputies lodged projets in February to protect individual sites.

Deputy Baudains is also asking Environment that, when considering planning applications in the built-up area, they should take into account all applicable Island Plan policies.
