Jersey bid for Junior Muratti hat-trick

Saturday 9th April 2005, 12:00AM BST.

MANAGER Jon Welsh will have five new caps in his team to face Guernsey in the Jersey Telecom Junior Muratti at Springfield tomorrow afternoon.

Soon-to-retire Welsh, who is looking for his fifth success in six years, has named his side to defend the Junior Inter-Insular Cup for the second-year in succession.

Nine-man Jersey won a stormy match last year, three players were sent off and six cautioned.

Welsh hopes there is no repeat of those statistics tomorrow.

He said: ‘The best players in the Channel Islands in the age group will be on show tomorrow and I hope the public sees a good game of football.’ ‘Jersey and Guernsey now both have quality games programmes so the preparation for both teams has been excellent.

‘Murattis are big games for everyone and I know Guernsey will prove tough to break down.

‘Hopefully both teams can keep 11 players on the pitch but once the players cross the white line the heat and the passion of the game sometimes takes over.’ Welsh won his first two Murattis 2-1 and 6-2 before losing 1-0 in 2002.

The past two seasons have resulted in 1-0 wins for Jersey.

The manager added: ‘Scoring goals has been a bit of a problem area for us but another 1-0 scoreline in our favour and I will be happy.

We have trained hard this week on converting chances and hopefully it will all come good for us on the day.’ Defensively Jersey look very sound with the back four all playing in last year’s victory.

Goalkeeper Jack Jouanny also played last year having come on as a substitute after Frazer Siddal had been red-carded for a handball offence.

Jersey’s other capped player is midfielder Luke Watson, who is team captain.

Ross Allen is the only survivor from Guernsey’s starting XI last year, while all three substitutes who were used in the 1-0 defeat at Foote’s Lane a year ago – Kyle Stone, Jason Boscher and Ollie Smith – are again in the squad.

One notable absentee is Guernsey’s suspended Billy Page.

He has partnered Allen up front in the last three South-West Counties Youth Championship matches as part of an unchanged line-up.

North, the winners of Guernsey’s U18s and U16s divisions this season, provide eight of the squad.

Rangers have five involved, St Martin’s three and Vale Rec and Bels one each.

Jersey U18s: Jack Jouanny (First Tower), Danny Hughes (St Paul’s), Joel Speight (First Tower), Tom Poole (First Tower), Sam Dewhurst (First Tower), Sean Doran (Sp Academics), Jamie Allan (St Paul’s), Luke Watson (capt, St Paul’s), Tony Maguire (First Tower), Craig Russell (St Paul’s), Daniel Parry (First Tower), Substitutes: Matt Brookland (St Paul’s), Neil Crowell (Jersey Wanderers), Josh Franco (St Peter), David Syvret (First Tower); Matthew Purdie (St Paul’s), Adam Speight (First Tower), Carl Stoodley (Jersey Wanderers) and Jonny Lee (St Paul’s).

Kick-off 2 pm, Springfield Jersey are sponsored by Capita Financial Services and Cameron’s Building Contractors.
