2nds march on to all-Jersey Sugden

Monday 11th April 2005, 12:00AM BST.

JERSEY RFC 2nds, crowned JRA Emeraude Lines champs last Wednesday, duly moved into the final of the Sugden Cup with a 48-0 victory over Les Quennevais at St Peter yesterday.

Jersey will now face Jersey United Banks, impressive victors over Guernsey 2nds, in the final at St Peter this Sunday.

With Les Quennevais someway off their strongest line-up the result was not unexpected, although the fourth-placed league side did stick to their task well, particularly in the first half.

Opening exchanges were even, with only a try from impressive prop Jim Brimelow separating the sides for much of the half.

But as the game wore on the gap started to widen, despite good defending from Les Quennevais.

Rampaging lock Matt Collins touched down on the right to make it 10-0 after some nifty work from prop Colin Crawford who had joined in on the wing.

Crawford played a heavy price for his efforts though, leaving the scene with a shoulder injury in an ambulance.

Just before the break Collins again tore through the Les Quennevais cover to send left-winger Karl Hayes in for the first of his two tries.

John Felton struck the bar with his third failed conversion attempt leaving the half-time score at 15-0.

There looked no way back for Les Quennevais and when fresh Jersey legs were introduced more gaps began to appear.

James Milner did good work at speed to create the first try of the half for substitute winger Daniel Arthur.

Scrum-half Paul Nayar, a try scorer in an impressive show against Wanderers last Wednesday – not the holidaying Steve Mee as reported – took over the kicking duties to make it 22-0 – the first of his four second-half conversions.

Arthur then tore though a bewildered Les Quennevais defence before off-loading to veteran Bob Le Brocq who went over under the posts.

Hayes and Arthur added their second scores of the match, with Ross Allan freeing Henry Glieson for the final try.
