New waterfront master scheme

A NEW master plan for the waterfront, with five linked ar-eas designed to revitalise tourism and the economy, is nearing completion.

The Waterfront Enterprise Board’s revised plans to transform the waterfront into a world-class attraction include a new business district on the Esplanade car park site and a new call for a bridge link with the ‘old town’.

The revived bridge plan is just one element of a comprehensive privately funded scheme designed to revitalise St Helier from the Weighbridge to St Aubin’s Bay and from the town centre to the Elizabeth Marina.

The scheme encompasses five linked but distinctive projects to deliver a completed waterfront which WEB believes the Island needs to revitalise tourism and the Island’s economy.

The districts are the waterfront hotel; the island site; Jardins de la Mer; Dandara’s Castle Quay mixed residential, leisure and retail development on the Les Pas site; and a new business district on the Esplanade car park.

The five developments will be delivered in phases with each including public and civic uses, public art, landscaping and water features using natural material and indigenous plants.

Reducing the impact of traffic will also be a major consideration.
