Mahrer ends 50-year wait for medal!

Tuesday 12th April 2005, 12:00AM BST.

VETERAN snooker player Mick Mahrer won his first league medal last night – at the age of 73!

The former Island snooker and Channel Islands billiards champion was an extremely happy man after Mechanics’ B defeated divisional champions Mechs A to win the Riley Shield final last night.

Team captain Mahrer said: ‘It was a great team result.

I was a bit surprised but I’m delighted as it’s the first league medal I’ve won in over 50 years.

‘I lost my best of three frames aggregate scores match against John Browne but Guy Heys and Jeremy Gogan both played well to see us home.

‘Guy put us nine points ahead after I lost by 79 points so it was down to Jeremy and he played his best snooker of the season.

In the first frame he swamped Ian Gould to win by 120 points.

‘It was an excellent frame and he kept ahead in the final two frames to win us the match.’ Trust administrator Gogan (26) said: ‘My first frame was excellent, Ian made a couple of mistakes and I was able to punish him with a 30-plus break and two over 20.

‘Mick had a shaky start and Guy turned it round for us.

It was all down to the last three frames and fortunately I had a good opener and it was a lot then for Ian to pull back.’ Frame scores (A-team players named first): John Browne 201, Mick Mahrer 122.

Mike Molloy 122, Guy Heys 210.

Ian Gould 113, Jeremy Gogan 266.

The final was refereed by Gary Truscott.
