JERSEY’S economy is turning the corner back to growth, employment figures issued today appear to show.
After a number of years of steady decline in the number of people employed, there are strong signs of stability.
In the 12 months to December 2004, the number of jobs dropped by only 60.
In the same period a year earlier the figure was 660.
In total, the number of people in work was 49,350 at the end of last year.
In the private sector the number of jobs fell by 80 but rose by 20 in the public sector to make up the net loss of 60.
However, after annual falls of many hundreds of jobs for a number of years the slowdown in job reduction has been a fillip for politicians responsible for producing annual economic growth of two per cent.
Economic Development Committee president Deputy Gerald Voisin welcomed the latest figures, saying they gave a platform on which to build.
