Le Maistre gets Muratti call
Wednesday 13th April 2005, 12:00AM BST.
ST PETER FC defender Trevor Le Maistre could bridge a seven-year gap and play in the Cherry Godfrey Centenary Muratti next month.
The tough-tackling and strong defender has been included in Jersey’s squad of 22 players announced for the game in Guernsey on Monday 2 May by manager Dave Matthews.
Le Maistre has played just six games, plus one as substitute, for the Saints this season but he has obviously caught Matthews’ eye in recent games.
Matthews said: ‘Trevor has had an in-and-out season games-wise for St Peter this season but I’ve seen him play and his manager Jon Trigg says he is training and working very hard on his game regularly.
‘He is a big stage player, he is very experienced and he has an opportunity to show his worth on Saturday as St Peter play Guernsey Sylvans in the WJ Collins final at Springfield.
‘Sylvans have six players in Guernsey’s Muratti squad so it will be a good test for him and to see how well he is playing.’ Le Maistre, who has won six caps, last played in a Muratti in Jersey’s 2-0 success at Springfield in 1998.
Matthews says the door is not closed on other players to come in as there are several games still to be played including the Upton Park Trophy appearance for Jersey Scottish’s players against Sylvans.
Rozel Rovers’ Frazer Siddall, a goalkeeper with great potential, will be asked to train with the squad but he will not feature in the Muratti unless there are major injuries to the other three goalkeepers.
The squad, with the exception of the Scottish players, will train on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, from 6 pm, at Les Quennevais next week.
There is a meeting, not a training session, for the Muratti squad on Sunday at the IJ Bathe Field at 10.30 am.
Jersey’s squad is: Jimmy Styles, Casey Hickling, Gareth Bailey, Chris McNabb, James Hayward, Allan Brown, Trevor Le Maistre, Stuart André, Ryan Lumsden, Craig Ferey, Kevan Crowell, Scott Jones, Chris Andrews, Luc Le Mière, Dave Brodie, Ged McConnell, Jon Fitzmaurice, Craig Leitch, Ross Crick, Jimmy Reilly, Dave Le Roux and Paul Aitken.
