Consider ethics before cost, say campaigners

CONSUMERS need to consider ethical issues and not just cost when making decisions, according to businessman Sean Power.

Campaigning for the Global Week of Action for Trade Justice, he says people in rich countries need to consider more than just a low price tag.

Mr Power is campaigning outside Bhs today to promote Health in the Work Place, the theme for the fourth day of the Global Week of Action.

Campaigners around the world are trying to bring global trade justice to the top of the agenda by raising awareness in their communities.

‘People should stop and think when they buy a computer,’ he said.

‘Where do the components come from? We are asking people to fill out postcards and send them to Belle, Hewlett Packard and IBM and question whether parts have come from sweat shops.

‘Sweat shops are factories in places like Mexico that have people working in diabolical conditions for 12 and 13 hours a day.

They pay them buttons and anyone who buys a computer with components from these places should think about the misery they are inflicting upon people.’
