Football:Saints face massive cup final task

Saturday 16th April 2005, 12:00AM BST.

JERSEY’S St Peter take on the might of Guernsey Sylvans this afternoon in the WJ Collins Memorial Trophy final at Springfield.

Saints manager Jon Trigg, in his first season in charge, says everyone at St Peter are looking forward to the game but his team are massive underdogs.

Sylvans won the Guernsey Priaulx title eleven days ago; it was their tenth Sarnian championship in 12 seasons.

Trigg, a former professional with Sunderland and Swindon Town, said: ‘We have a massive task on our hands to win the trophy but we will give it a go.

Sylvans are a very experienced side when you compare their players to ours.

‘They have a wealth of experience while I think I’ve got four or five players in a squad of 20 who have previously played in a cup final.

‘It will be a very difficult game for us and I’m hoping we can give a good account of ourselves.

We’ve done reasonably well against the top Jersey teams and hopefully that will continue today.

‘My team has made great progress this season but we have not achieved anything – yet! We suffered our first league defeat since October last weekend against St Paul’s and that result has brought us down to earth.

However losing to St Paul’s should not detract the progress the players have made.’ St Peter: Gareth Bayley, Andy Clarke, Conrad Proud, Rob Cameron, Trevor Le Maistre, Dean Godwin, Martin Paton, Peter Burley, Lee Turner, Paul Dicker, Stuart Cameron, Ryan Le Cornu, Chad Morris, Mark Nicol, Darren Freeman, Gary Freeman, Varco Varela, Vitor Dos Santos, James Quinn and Michael Reed.

Kick-off is at 2.30 pm.

Sylvans: Richard Davey, Jason Blampied, Matt Drillot, Ian Potter, John Nobes, Paul Nobes, Matt Le Cras, Tony Vance, Matt Warren, Neil Clegg, Adie Exall, Carl Wallbridge, Craig Le Prevost, Ben Hewlett, Aaron Ferbrache and Craig Mollet.
