National winner backs Jersey racing

Saturday 16th April 2005, 12:00AM BST.

TREVOR HEMMINGS, owner of Grand National winner Hedgehunter, will again be sponsoring a race at Les Landes tomorrow.

Hemmings, reputed to be worth £730 million and an Island 1(1)K resident, will be supporting the Jersey Guineas at the Jersey Race Club meeting.

The 3.40 for the Gautier Memorial Trophy carries prize money of £2,750 with the winner collecting £1,690 – Hedgehunter’s prize at Aintree last weekend was over £300,000.

Hemmings is hoping to be there – but will be in Ayr today where he has two runners, Chives and Lord Jack, running in the Scottish Grand National.

‘I’ll certainly get there if I can,’ he said yesterday.

‘I love going to the races in Jersey and know a lot of people in the racing community.’ But his wife Eva will be at Les Landes to present the trophy to the winner.

Meanwhile he’s hoping for a repeat of last Saturday with Chives.

‘We’re quite hopeful for him,’ said Hemmings from Penrith in Cumbria where he is on business.

The Guineas will have field of eight runners headed by favourite Perfect Portrait, trained by Alyson Malzard.
