Residents return as explosion risk reduces
Saturday 16th April 2005, 12:00AM BST.
FIREFIGHTERS allowed St Peter’s Valley residents back into their homes at 4.15 pm yesterday after fears of a gas cylinder exploding were allayed.
More than 50 people were evacuated after the cylinder caught fire in a workshop at around 2.15 pm on Thursday.
It is likely, however, that Rue de la Vallée, the main road past the Granite Products quarry in the valley, will remain closed until midday today.
The decision was taken at around 2.30 pm yesterday to start using jets of water to cool the six-foot by one-foot acetylene cylinder.
