Football:Battling Saints beaten by penalties

Monday 18th April 2005, 12:00AM BST.

ST PETER paid the penalty for some rash challenges as they lost the WJ Collins Memorial Trophy final against Guernsey Sylvans to two penalty kicks on Saturday.

Marco Vieira tripped Matt Le Cras for the first, in the 12th minute, and goalkeeper Gareth Bayley then made contact with Paul Nobes as the winger pushed the ball around him some 11 minutes from the end.

Neil Clegg and Matt Warren scored the kicks but Guernsey’s champions missed another in the final minute, after Paul Dicker fouled Warren, when Warren screwed his shot wide.

Sylvans missed three fine first-half opportunities but in the second period St Peter pressed Sylvans hard, but they lacked a cutting edge.

Sylvans stalwart Tony Vance said: ‘It’s nice to win another trophy but if we are to beat Jersey Scottish in the Upton next Saturday we will have to play better than today.

‘We have three or four to come in, I’m just getting back from an injury; Adie Exall was also on as a substitute while Steve Bréhaut and Jason Blampied should be back in midfield and defence respectively.’ St Peter manager Jon Trigg said: ‘We started very slow but I was very pleased with our second half performance.

We pushed Sylvans back for long periods, however our quality from set pieces could have been better and we did not test the goalkeeper.

‘For all our endeavour we lacked a bit of craft to open them up but it would be harsh to be critical about this set of players, we are incredibly proud of them all for their efforts this season.

‘I’ve had excellent support from assistant Martin King and coach Dave Walsh too, it’s been great team-work and taking the game to Guernsey’s champions shows how far we have progressed.

‘To improve and take the club forward we need to add some quality to the squad and that is now up to us all on the management side to attract players and convince a few that have taken early retirement to put their boots on once more’.

Sylvans looked dangerous on set pieces, particularly Paul Nobes’ long throw-ins, while St Peter’s Trevor Le Maistre could have boosted his Muratti appearance chance with a solid performance in defence.
