All-Convent clash to decide netball title

Tuesday 19th April 2005, 12:00AM BST.

TWO teams from the same club will meet to decide the destiny of the JNA Deutsche Bank Winter League Division Ia championship.

The Convent A and B teams play on Thursday night with the A team knowing they have to score 34 goals more than their B side to win the league on goal average.

If they don’t then the title stays with St Clement A.

But with a much-weakened Convent B side, that win is certainly within the A’s reach.

‘We’ll have to score eight goals more than them in each quarter – well, ten in one – to win the title,’ said A team manager Linda Andrews.

The B team will be without shooter Sharon Ollivier and minus WD Serena Guthrie who, after playing ‘up’ for the A side on three occasions, cannot now play in the B team.

Said B team manager Debbie Pitman: ‘We’ll struggle with only one shooter.

We’ll certainly field seven players but I don’t know who they’ll be yet.

Our C team (in Division Ib) play on Thursday as well and have eight players – but no spare WD we can use.

We’ll try our best, and we will certainly fulfil the fixture, but it’ll be a difficult game.

It’s a shame it has to come down to B versus A – it’s just one of those things.’ Earlier in the season, a full-strength B side shocked their A team by beating them – and they also beat St Clement A.

Thursday night’s situation has arisen after Convent A were restricted to a mere four-goal win by a determined St Brelade at FB last night, with the final score 27-23 – a rather different affair than last Thursday’s 43-22 win for Convent.

Despite that, Andrews said she had been confident her team wouldn’t lose.

‘There was a lot of tension and we missed a lot of shots.

Our passing was atrocious at times and we were anxious and hesitant.

We cer(cont from back page) certainly didn’t play our usual flowing game.’ Of their opponents Andrews added: ‘Gill Kaye’s shooting was phenomenal, she converted some fantastic shots and really kept them in the game.

St Brelade did their damndest to put the obstacles in our way, all credit to them.’ Convent A captain Jane Le Feuvre said: ‘The court was wet and slippery and it impacted on the game.

Our centre court play was messy and it was a difficult game.

We were under pressure because we knew we had to win and St Brelade were determined and defended very well.

But we’re going to have quite a lot to do on Thursday.’ Ann Halliwell, Jersey Netball Association president, said it was not in the least unusual to have two or even three teams from the same club playing in the same league.

‘There may be three or four teams from a club, and even if they start in different leagues they are promoted or relegated in time.

Convent have three teams in Division I, St Clement have two; lower down there are two St Ouen teams in Division IV – who could both move up to Division III.’ In last night’s other matches St Clement B beat St Lawrence A 36-26 in Division Ib which means St Lawrence have to beat Convent C on Thursday to stay up.

In Division II, Quackers A stayed top after beating second-placed St Lawrence B 25-19, both sides should move up next season.

St Ouen Juniors maintained their 100 per cent record this season, beating St Clement E 21-20 in Division IV to guarantee promotion.

In Division III mid-table St Clement D beat bottom club Accies C 48-15.
