Mahrer pots fourth Island billiards title

Wednesday 20th April 2005, 12:00AM BST.

VETERAN Mick Mahrer won the Island Billiards title for the fourth time last night.

At the Jersey Mechanics’ Institute, the Mechs player defeated fellow Island team cueist Guy Heys by 500 points to 460.

Mahrer retained the title and he now faces Guernsey’s Adam Shorto in the Channel Islands’ final at the JMI on Friday 29 April.

Mahrer was first to settle and a 44 break put him 103-85 ahead at the 100-point mark.

Mahrer’s fine scoring continued with a 54, the highest break of the night, although Heys was competing well with scores of 27, 39 and 21 to trail 200-150.

Heys had the highest breaks of 39 and 26 up to the 300-point mark while Mahrer replied with five breaks around the 20-mark to remain ahead 306-241.

Mahrer stretched ahead at 407-312 before Heys countered with some good form with breaks of 24 (twice), 19 and 39.

Unfortunately he started his comeback too late and Mahrer ran out the victor.

Mahrer’s previous Island titles were won in 1995, 2002 and last year.

The match was refereed by Keith White and sponsored by Furniture World 2001 Ltd and A1 Landscape & Gardening Services.
