Point of no return
Wednesday 20th April 2005, 12:00AM BST.
THE son of a sea captain who died in a shipwreck off Noirmont 55 years ago made a special donation to the St Helier lifeboat on Monday.
Tom Kirwan travelled from Dublin to present a £150 cheque in memory of his father, Captain Leo Kirwan, who went down with his ship, the Killurin, on 7 February 1950.
The lifeboat crew were unable to rescue him but they did recover his body later that morning.
The Killurin smashed into the rocks off Noirmont Point and three of its nine-strong crew died.
Capt Kirwan stayed on the bridge to ensure that all hands were clear and was swept away by the tumultuous seas.
He and the ship’s bosun, Nicholas Murphy, drowned and ship’s cook James Baines could not be found and was presumed dead.
The Killurin had been on the final stages of its three-day journey from Hull to Jersey, carrying slag.
