Westerners blow down Beeches

ST BRELADE Sports Club won the Coca-Cola Combination’s Lady Bingham Trophy for the first time last night.
At a wet Springfield, before a noisy crowd of around 250, the Saints’ Reserves defeated their Beeches Old Boys counterparts 3-1.
After a goal-less first half, St Brelade then ran into a three-goal lead following strikes by Nico Bisson, Danny Richardson and Mark Tostevin.
The Old Boys replied through Paul Skinner.
Saints manager Brian McBride said: ‘We squandered two chances first half but I told the lads to keep playing the way they were.
‘We had good possession and we finally broke through when Nico scored a fine individual goal.
Danny made it 2-0 when he lobbed the goalkeeper from 30 yards and then Mark added a third after the goalkeeper parried his first shot.
‘Mark deserved his goal, he was commanding in our defence and when he won the ball he distributed it well.’ Beeches boss Dave McVey said: ‘We were steady first half and although St Brelade had good periods of possession we restricted them a little.
‘They are a strong side and after they went three-up we continued to battle and never let our heads drop.
Jamie Shaw had a 35-yard pile-driver pushed round a post by the goalkeeper and we deservedly pulled one back when Paul Skinner bent a left-foot free kick from 25 yards into a bottom corner.
‘We’ve fielded a very much changed side this season for various reasons.
We deserved our goal because of our commitment and we pushed St Brelade hard in the closing stages as we searched for a second.’ Richardson was cautioned for taking his shirt off in celebrating – and told the referee he knew he was going to get carded but that the goal was worth paying the fine for!
