Youngsters go to press on the Occupation
Wednesday 20th April 2005, 12:00AM BST.
NINE young journalists have written a one-off eight-page newspaper about the Occupation which is published in today’s Jersey Evening Post.
Free Times, organised by the Jersey Arts Centre and sponsored by Jersey Finance Ltd, was put together by the budding journalists and photographers in conjunction with the JEP.
The youngsters who took part were Felicity Le Quesne, Ben Morel, Steven Lawrence, Fleur Haines, Charlotte Agnès, Phil Ashley, Rebecca Makin, Ruaridh Papworth and Layla McCreery.
They interviewed Islanders who lived through the Occupation and wrote about why they think it is still relevant to young people today.
The A-Level students, aged from 16 to 18, have called for lessons about the significance of the Occupation to be pushed up the Jersey curriculum.
Kate Kirk, of Mourants, who helped the students to put the project together, said they had really taken to it, and that stories from people who survived the Occupation had brought the whole experience to life for them.
‘Freedom Times was written by and is aimed at young people,’ said Ms Kirk.
‘We had an intensive four days in the studio at the Arts Centre during the Easter holidays and everybody was really enthusiastic and committed to the project.’
