Final league hurdle for Jersey’s rugby champions

Friday 22nd April 2005, 12:00AM BST.

IF Jersey RFC win against second-placed Effingham and Leatherhead at St Peter tomorrow, they will complete a unique Island double: finishing top of the London South-West League Division III and remaining unbeaten throughout the season.

Meanwhile the visitors, who are in an unassailable second place, know that the following week is more important than this for them.

For they have to play Purley in a play-off for that second promotion place to London South-West, Division II.

They will still want to win tomorrow, to show that they are worthy of promotion, but as Jersey coach Dai Burton said: ‘They might think about toppling us, but Purley will be a hard team to beat.

That game will be their priority.’ In their first encounter this season, away from home, Jersey’s win over the UK opposition was marred by what Burton termed ‘off-the ball incidents’ as the opposition pack tried to disrupt his team’s style of play.

It worked to some effect – two Island players were sin-binned – but not enough to give Effingham a win (they lost 28-39).

And Burton is confident his team will win again, not least because his side are now playing for places in next week’s Siam Cup team.

Indeed, Jersey have almost an embarrassment of riches, with three players on the bench Burton believes: ‘are better than any players they will have in their team’.

They include former try-scoring machine, winger Richard Finch, who has been unavailable for three weeks, London-Irish-bound Matt Banahan and 20-stone prop Gareth Davies.

‘They’ll all come on, in the run-up to the Siam Cup,’ said Burton, adding that the 2nds/Wanderers’ game will be a chance to look at players for possible selection in next week’s Fallaize Cup side.

Team: Marcus Nobes, Doc Snook, Josh Chamier, Danny McAlister, Roger Quirk, Brett Els, Ian Henderson, Steve O’Brien, Dave Miles, Darren Toudic, Matt Davenport-Brown, Andy Whelan, Mark White, James Milner, Gareth Jeffreys.

Replacements: Matt Banahan, Gareth Davies, Richard Finch.
