Finance to meet the public over tax proposals

Friday 22nd April 2005, 12:00AM BST.

FINANCE and Economics will hold two public meetings on Monday to explain their tax proposals in the run-up to the fiscal strategy debate.

Committee president Senator Terry Le Sueur says there are still misconceptions about what he and his colleagues are proposing and why the Island is facing a £100 million tax gap.

The meetings will be held at St Paul’s Centre at 1.30 pm and 4.30 pm and each is expected to last 2 1/2 hours.

Senator Le Sueur, economic advisers Oxera and States treasurer Ian Black will explain and discuss the proposals, which could see a three per cent sales tax and the Itis tax instalment scheme established, and tax allowances for middle and high earners phased out.

Senator Le Sueur said: ‘These meetings are not just to lecture people about what Finance and Economics are doing, but to have a discussion about which options are available and which ones might be the best for Jersey.’
