Ladies football: Tower ready for Upton tussle with Sylvans
Friday 22nd April 2005, 12:00AM BST.
FIRST Tower United and Guernsey Sylvans clash in the first ladies’ football Upton tomorrow morning for the Jersey Football Association Centenary Trophy.
Tower, who have 11 players included in Jersey’s Muratti squad, have had a fine season winning the Coca-Cola Combination ladies’ division with 13 victories in 14 games, their only defeat was 3-2 against second-placed St John.
They also reached the Zenith Trust and Colin Welsh Trophy finals this season, losing the former and winning the latter.
Tower assistant Geoff Van Der Vliet said: ‘We’re expecting a hard game, Sylvans have six Island players in their squad while we have some key players missing for various reasons.
‘But those that will come in have been excellent replacements throughout this season and I’ve every confidence they will not let us down tomorrow.
‘We have good strength in depth and I’m sure we will give a good account of ourselves.
‘We will play the same way as we have all season.
We will pass the ball and look for our quick midfielders to support our strikers.
‘We know little about Sylvans, we will concentrate on our game and hopefully win.’ Serena Guthrie is missing because of a netball commitment, Danielle Evans is away, Jodie Botterill and Michelle Bichard have returned to University while Lara Couvert is sidelined with a broken foot.
Kick-off at La Hague Manor is at 10 am.
The fixture will be added to the inter-insular calendar and in future be competed for annually.
First Tower: Stephanie Henwood, Nicki Warren, Kate Warren, Candice Sharples, Claire Le Quesne, Lauren Jéhan, Kerry Sauvage, Diana Dos Santos, Sarah Bland, Louise Van Der Vliet, Eve Watson, Nadia Couvert and Anna Gouveia.
Tomorrow’s Upton Park Trophy match at Springfield, between Coca-Cola Combination champions Jersey Scottish and Guernsey’s finest Sylvans, will be previewed in tomorrow’s JEP, on sale from 9.30 am.
