Upton Trophy: Andrews sinks Sylvans
Monday 25th April 2005, 12:00AM BST.
MURATTI captain Chris Andrews produced a moment of magic to fire home a 92nd-minute goal and give Jersey Scottish the Upton Park Trophy at Springfield on Saturday.
Before a crowd of nearly 800, who were expecting extra-time, Andrews teased his left-back Jason Blampied with a series of step-overs, à la Cristiano Ronaldo, before going on the outside and hitting a low shot across the face of goal and into the far corner of the net.
It was a brilliant goal and lifted Scottish to their fourth Upton success – and Sylvans their fifth Upton defeat in seven years.
Fifteen minutes earlier Scottish had former Muratti goalkeeper Jamie Brewster to thank for keeping them in the match, an excellent double save thwarting Neil Clegg.
Brewster spread his body superbly to block after Sylvans’ veteran Tony Vance touched on a pass to Clegg following a brilliant 50-yard run by Paul Nobes.
Ross Crick had fired Scottish into a 27th-minute lead only for Vance to slide home Sylvans’ equaliser nine minutes later following great work by Matt Le Cras.
Scottish manager Bob Kearsey said: ‘I thought we were going into extra-time but Chris popped up to score an excellent goal.
He won the game for us today – just like he did by scoring the only goal for us at Trinity recently when we won the league title.
‘Sylvans fought hard, it was as tough as I expected and overall I thought we had more possession and created the better of the chances to have won it inside the 90 minutes.
Sylvans’ veteran Tony Vance, who will now retire along with Adie Exall said: ‘It was disappointing to lose.
It would have been nice to have gone out on a high but it was not to be.
‘We planned to hit Scottish on the break and we nearly did it but their goalkeeper made a brilliant double save to deny us towards the end.’ The game started slowly before Scottish started to take a hold of the midfield.
Davey positioned himself well to save from Yazalde Santos while Crick and Paul Aitken both fired over Davey’s crossbar.
A bit more bend on Paul Nobes’ 30-yard free-kick could well have resulted in a goal for Sylvans.
Brothers Dave and Gordon Brodie passed the ball confidently in Scottish’s midfield while Sylvans got joy up the flanks through Le Cras and Paul Nobes.
Scottish went ahead when Ged McConnell, unselfishly, passed to Crick and the Muratti striker’s shot from outside the penalty area took a slight deflection off a defender to give Davey no chance in the 27th minute.
Minutes later Andrews should have made it 2-0 but he fired over when well placed following a great run and pass by Crick.
Clegg was denied equalising by Ryan Lumsden’s clearance and then Clegg dragged a shot wide following a corner kick.
Sylvans finally capitalised after Scottish conceded two free kicks in quick succession.
Paul Nobes struck a free kick into a Scottish wall and picking up the rebound Nobes’ pass found Le Cras out on the left.
Le Cras raced behind Scottish’s defence and slipping the ball inside he found Vance who scored from six yards.
The second half opened brightly with both teams having three chances, the best falling to Clegg but he shot weakly at Brewster.
McConnell then ghosted in at a far post twice but each time his headers inside were cleared by Sylvans defenders.
Shortly afterwards Lumsden was forced off the field with a cut on the left cheek.
The injury required seven stitches.
Scottish were having good possession and Andrews squandered two opportunities before Sylvans’ Ian Potter hooked the ball clear when under heavy pressure.
After Brewster’s heroics against Clegg, John Nobes and Le Cras were cautioned for poor challenges.
Scottish appeals for a penalty following a challenge by Drillot were waved away and as the spectators were settling for extra-time Andrews broke to score and break Sylvans’ hearts with his 13th goal of the season.
