Tax plans put at public seminars

TWO groups of Islanders worked through the proposed new tax structure at seminars held at St Paul’s Centre yesterday.

The public seminars were organised by the Finance and Economics Committee as a way of allowing people to secure a better understanding of what is proposed and why the changes are necessary.

Finance and Economics Committee president Senator Terry Le Sueur said he was pleased with the way the exercise had gone but expressed disappointment that more people had not turned up.

And he said the committee would redouble its efforts to get the message across to the wider community as to why it was proposing a range of tax changes to raise up to £100m a year from 2009.
