ENGLAND under-17 badminton star Mariana Agathangelou narrowly missed out on a gold medal at the European Six Nations finals in France.

The competition involved each country playing the others in two singles, two doubles and two mixed doubles over five days – and Agathangelou was picked for every doubles and mixed match.

Captaining the the side, Agathangelou partenered Vicki Ingram in the doubles and they won all their games until they faced the reigning European champions and top seeds Thorberg and Kruse of Denmark in the final.

After losing the first set 15-11 the England pair succumbed 15-2 in the second to collect the silver medal.

In the mixed Agathangelou and Peter Mills also won all their games up to the semi-final, where they faced Germans Kasbauer and Voigt.

They edged 14-11 ahead in the first set but then couldn’t clinch the final point and their opponents stole it 15-14.

In the next it went to 14-14 before the Germans again pulled away to win 17-14 leaving the England pair with the bronze.

Overall England finished third behind winners Denmark and the Netherlands.
