Muratti football stars hit the post

Wednesday 27th April 2005, 12:00AM BST.

JERSEY Post are issuing their first ever circular stamp – the £2 issue – to commemorate the centenaries of the Jersey Football Association and the Muratti competition.

Released on Wednesday, the stamp is in the shape of the first Muratti medal from 1905, and the mounting features Jersey football legends Graeme Le Maistre – the Muratti’s greatest ever scorer with 24 goals in 21 appearances – and Graeme Le Saux, the only Jerseyman to represent England, play in a World Cup, win the Premiership and play in an FA Cup final.

Two pictures of Mr Le Saux, who played for Chelsea and Blackburn – with whom he won the Premiership title – and now plays for Southampton, feature on the stamp’s mounting.

‘Playing in both Upton Park and Muratti finals for junior and senior teams gave me a huge sense of pride,’ he said.

‘That happened the year I signed professional forms for Chelsea and at the time I was very excited.

But it’s only now that I realise the chances of that happening are very, very rare.

It was down to the teams I played in as much as me.’ Mr Le Maistre is featured on the stamp with the Muratti Vase in 1947.

Also featured on the mounting is the current Jersey kit and the strip from 1947, as well as the Muratti Vase and one of the 2005 winners’ medals.

The £2 stamp marks the 100th anniversary of both the Muratti competition and the JFA and was designed by artist Andrew Robinson.

The first Muratti game was played at Springfield on 27 April 1905 (although Jersey people tend to forget who finished 1-0 winners on the day) and the JFA was formed three months later.
