Muratti:’We are going to win’
Wednesday 27th April 2005, 12:00AM BST.
MIDFIELD maestro Dave Brodie is confident Jersey can win the Cherry Godfrey Centenary Muratti in Guernsey on Monday.
With the dust now settled after last week’s Upton Park Trophy success for Jersey Scottish against Guernsey Sylvans, Scotsman Brodie is totally focused on helping Jersey to their third successive Vase victory against the Sarnians.
Brodie (34), said: ‘Jersey will win, definitely, I’ve no doubts about that.
‘We have a good enough team, we have direct and quick players like Chris Andrews and Ross Crick and myself to hurt Guernsey and if we perform well on the day then I can’t see us losing.
‘It’s going to be intimidating before a big crowd but that’s what footballers want, big crowds to play in front of – there will be a great buzz about the game.’ Clydebank-born Brodie, a plumber, won the Ossie Eloury Trophy for man-of-the-match last year in Jersey’s 3-0 success at Springfield.
Brodie said: ‘It was a bonus, I wasn’t thinking about it as the most important thing is winning the game for the team and Jersey.
I’m a Scotsman but I want to win just like the Jersey-born players do.
We are playing Guernsey and winning means as much to me as it does all the Jersey people.’ Brodie, who predicts a 2-0 Jersey win, was sent off playing for Jersey Scottish in last year’s Upton defeat in Guernsey, on a penalty shoot-out, and he says he has learned from his error.
‘It was a rash moment and I’ve learned from it.
My discipline has been much better this season and I’m not going to let anyone down on Monday either.’ Brodie was a former professional at Queen’s Park where he spent four seasons playing for the first team.
They were an amateur club playing in a professional league at the time and Brodie moved away to earn more money.
He is on a hat-trick on Monday afternoon – either way.
He has won two of his four Vase finals to date although he has yet to win in Guernsey.
Let’s hope the hat-trick completed is a Jersey success for the player and Dave Matthews’ team.
