Snooker:No joy for Jersey

Wednesday 27th April 2005, 12:00AM BST.

JERSEY’S hopes of double snooker success were sunk in Guernsey at the weekend.

Robbie Kilpatrick was beaten 4-0 in the Channel Islands individual snooker final on Friday night while the following day Jersey champions Mechanics’ A lost a sudden-death decider against Guernsey the Ex-Servicemen’s Club.

And the man who inflicted the double dose of defeat on Jersey was Sarnian Martin Desperques.

He did not drop a frame all weekend and even though not at his best he was in a different league from Kilpatrick.

The Jersey champion said: ‘I was totally outplayed.

Martin deserved his win, I have no complaints whatsoever.’ The frame scores were 64-37, 74-31, 87-29, 69-44.

The best-of-12-frames inter-island club match was much closer.

Desperques gave Guernsey a 3-0 lead and after Tristan Ozanne won the first against Jersey’s John Browne it looked over for the visitors.

But Browne then won the next two against Ozanne and the Mechs’ Mike Molloy beat Adrian Holley 2-1.

Jersey were now ahead 5-4.

The match was subsequently tied as Jeremy Gogan won the first frame against John Skillett and as the two shared the final two frames the match ended 6-6.

Desperques played Browne in the decider and the Sarnian scored a 17 break only for Browne to reply with a 44.

Browne was in control but he then missed a red into a middle pocket.

Desperques stepped in to make a 33, the break ended when he missed an easy brown.

Browne still led 53-50 and things remained tight until Browne missed a pink for the match leaving Desperques to step in and sink the final two balls for victory overall.

Mechs captain Molloy said: ‘We were disappointed, especially after going so close.

The match was much closer this year and hopefully we can get our revenge with the inter-insular in Jersey on Saturday.’
