AN ACT of compassion in 1940 by Occupation historian Joe Mière has been recognised by the German Ambassador to the UK.

Thomas Matussek last week contacted Mr Mière to thank him for saving the lives of two German soldiers when their car crashed in St Helier.

Mr Mière recounted the story in his book, Never to be Forgotten, which was published last year.

The book reached the attention of Mr Matussek, who wrote to thank Mr Mière personally and on behalf of the unknown soldiers.

He congratulated Mr Mière for showing true Christian compassion to his enemy.

Friendship Mr Matussek wrote: ‘This year the 60th anniversary of the end of the Second World War will be celebrated in Britain and many other countries.

‘For a long time now, the former enemies have reached out the hand of friendship to each other over the graves of the fallen and have remembered the dead.

‘This has only been possible because people like you, Mr Mière, have provided an example of reconciliation.’
