Record-breaking fair pulls in the crowds

Tuesday 31st May 2005, 12:00AM BST.

AROUND 16,000 visitors attended the The Foire de Jersey over the three days of the bank holiday weekend, breaking all records of previous years.

The Foire was organised by the Royal Jersey Agricultural and Horticultural Society at its Trinity headquarters, the Royal Jersey Showground.

The busiest day was yesterday, when over 9,000 visitors attended.

Society president Derrick Frigot said: ‘By 4 pm on the Monday, it did look as if 9,000 visitors had come!’ Rain kept away mostly, despite an overcast day on the Sunday, and the cooler weather kept up visitor numbers rather than the reverse.

This year, the Foire incorporated the Fête Nouormande, and traditional Norman culture from the other Channel Islands and mainland Normandy was very much in evidence.

There was French produce on sale in ‘un marché normand’, and inside the building, the fourth ‘Artisan’s Showcase’ of Jersey arts and crafts attracted large crowds.

Entertainment also included music from the Band of the Island of Jersey, Punch and Judy shows and displays by dancing dogs and Indian runner ducks, which were expertly shepherded around obstacles by Welsh collie dogs.

It also included the society’s Island spring cattle show, which resulted in success for John Le Feuvre and family from St Peter.
