Waste strategy ‘strengthened by scrutiny process’

Tuesday 31st May 2005, 12:00AM BST.

ENVIRONMENT say the Island has a stronger and more effective Solid Waste Strategy thanks to the shadow scrutiny process.

They have published their final comments on the shadow scrutiny panel review on their own Solid Waste Strategy, which will be debated on 5 July.

Environment and Public Services took on board some of the panel’s recommendations, but rejected others including burying biodegradable waste and using alternative waste technologies.

The strategy represents one of the biggest capital projects the Island will have to take on, and lays out waste policy until 2030, including: A new £75.5m energy from waste plant A £3.9m composting plant A £1.4m reuse and recycling centre £450,000 per year for recycling initiatives The committee are expected to hold public meetings shortly to explain their proposals to the public ahead of the debate in July.

Environment Committee president Senator Philip Ozouf said: ‘I recognise the important contribution that scrutiny has made in raising the level of debate around the Island’s waste management.

The committee agreed with many of the recommendations and sentiments made by the panel – particularly in the area of recycling.

‘It disagrees with other recommendations which are outlined in today’s report.

‘The final strategy is much stronger as a result of the scrutiny process.

It shows a full and frank consideration of Jersey’s waste issues.

I thank the scrutiny panel for their valuable work in analysing our draft strategy and in raising awareness of the importance of the issue of waste.’
