JERSEY’S Simon Le Couilliard has claimed his second silver medal at the ASA National championships and Commonwealth swimming trials.

The 18-year-old was tenth overall in the 100m fly final but second in his 17 to 18-year age group.

He also lowered his first Abacus Island record, set just 24 hours earlier, by 0.17 sec to 55.55 in the Ponds Forge pool at Sheffield.

Earlier this week the AIB Tigers swimmer took silver in his age group in the 200m fly and has now qualified to swim for Jersey in two events at next year’s Commonwealth Games in Melbourne.

‘He’s had a great week,’ said coach Paul du Feu.

‘He will get faster between now and the Commonwealths and if he can improve by around 2% between now and the Games next March he’ll stand the chance of a good placing.’ Damien Bouchére went into his final swim, the 400m freestyle, trying to get an official 200m time – the swimmers are timed at the halfway mark – so he could claim a relay place in Melbourne next year.

And his time of 2 min 02.66 was the third best time recorded by a Jersey swimmer in Sheffield behind Le Couilliard and Alexis Militis.
