Fielding key as Niners win the softball league

Wednesday 31st August 2005, 12:00AM BST.

BARCLAYS NINERS clinched the Division I title by two points with a 23-5 victory over their rivals Ansbacher Flyers.

Flyers elected to bat first, and the Niners fielded excellently with their opponents failing to score a single run until the fourth innings and only managed to get runners on base 11 times during the game.

Ramon Alexander, aka Razor, Niners’ short stop provided quietly assured fielding, taking five catches including one in the outfield and a spectacular diving effort.

Solid performances also came from Dan De Oliveira at left field who took four catches and hit a home run, and ever-reliable pitching from Ardanowski.

With the bat the Niners steadily racked up the runs, with other home runs coming from Ardanowski (two), and another two from Alexander in the same innings.

But Ray Foster, Chris Le Lion and Karen Le Cornu made some great catches in the outfield.

Although the Flyers were under the cosh for most of this game it has been an excellent season for them and they pushed title favourites Niners right to the last game of the season.

The result of the other game played on Sunday was: Storm 25, AIB Shamrocks 11.

l On Bank Holiday Monday six teams took part in the annual knockout tournament.

After a series of round robin matches Barclays Blue Sox beat Serco Cubs and Storm beat Danepak Falcons in the semi-finals.

In the final Storm were comfortable winners by 27 runs to 9.
