Gough leads JICC to high-scoring win
Wednesday 31st August 2005, 12:00AM BST.
OPENERS Peter Gough and Ian Crocker put on a first-wicket stand of 216 to help the JICC to a 47-run win against Great Houghton at Grainville on Monday.
Gough hit eleven boundaries and four 6s on his way to 113.
Crocker fell nine runs short of a deserved century after he hit the boundary rope eleven times.
Island opener Gough was dropped early on and it proved costly as the pair scored at more than a run a ball on a super wicket and fast outfield.
Peter Scott kept the momentum going hitting two fours and two sixes, for 31 runs, while former Northants County Cricket Club all-rounder Tony Pemberthy was leading visiting bowler with two wickets for 42 runs in a nine-over spell of medium-fast.
Richard Anthony and Peter Blackburn tied Great Houghton down early on before Pemberthy played some classy shots in accumulating 30 runs.
Pemberthy was out brilliantly caught behind by wicketkeeper Gough, who stood up to take a thin edge off Andy Brown’s bowling.
JICC skipper Richard Gomersall opened the game up at this stage and Richie Afford took full advantage to smash 17 fours and four 6s.
Afford went on to make 132 – following up his 160 not out last year on his club’s first Jersey visit.
Despite Afford’s 77 and 81-run partnerships with Brough and Ribbons the run-rate proved too much leaving JICC victors by 47 run.
JICC’s Tom Minty took three wickets in a nine-over spell including one maiden.
